Knowledge addresses the evolving, accumulative, sustaining and powerful influence of knowledge over ignorance and fundamentalism. Shared knowledge manifests deeper understanding contributing to new knowledge and increased understanding. Books are like conversations encouraging discourse and debate to advance ideas, opportunities, beliefs, histories and shared humanity. The prints were created in 2014 for Absence and Presence: A Printmaking Response to the Bombing of Al-Mutanabbi Street. The bombing occurred on March 5th, 2007 and targeted books and booksellers in Baghdad, Iraq.
The sequence of five prints, in an edition of three, form a single horizontal work measuring 11” x 75”. Collagraph plates were made from book spines of outdated/discarded library book titles. Spine titles include: Human Genetics, Quantum Theory of Atomic Structures and The History of Life. The five collagraph plates were inked and printed using an etching press.
In March 2017, edition three was bound into book form coinciding with the ten year anniversary of the Baghdad bombing. In addition, the timing seemed an appropriate response to the behavior of United States President Donald Trump’s during his first month in office. His actions included intentionally spreading misinformation, taking retaliatory action against those questioning him and restricting freedom of the press.
