Between the Burners
The 2016 United States presidential primary elections encouraged the book Between the Burners. Seven months before the actual presidential election, candidate behavior, campaign tactics and party politics were appearing more like a bizarre circus then a process of civil Democracy. The book presents issues that were on the artist’s political burner for the last several election cycles. Repurposed print collages (back burner) and new print collages (front burner) are reconfigured and juxtaposed to comment on the folly and disconnect between the current political environment and the serious concerns of a diverse electorate.
The forty-eight page book includes twenty-three double-spread print collages incorporating screen printing, monoprinting, pigment printing, spray-paint stencil printing and vinyl printing on heavy-weight printmaking paper. Collage elements include a printed circuit board, a letterpress printed souvenir copy of the Declaration of Independence and the entire Bill of Rights. Book covers are made from double-weight book board with embedded electric stove burners. The book’s title is printed on the book’s exposed book block.
