an art life
an art life: kent manske & nanette wylde
July 2–August 14, 2024
Art Bias Gallery
1700 Industrial Road, San Carlos, California
Exhibition Statement
Our work involves explorations into the curiosities of existence. Storytelling is how we process and make meaning from the complex ecosystems we inhabit. In this exhibition, Nanette’s work considers our relationships to the natural world, the spiritual realm, and each other. Kent addresses cultural issues including gender, migration, aging, and loss. Five collaborative works—Your Own Light (lobby), Encyclopedic: Weathered Volumes, Occupy, Meaning Maker, and Table of Traits—are conceptual conversations where we ponder how things are and how things could be. We welcome and appreciate your engagement with the work.
About the Artists
Kent Manske and Nanette Wylde are storytellers who work independently and also collaborate on conceptual projects together. Their studios are located in North Fair Oaks/Redwood City and at Art Bias in San Carlos.
Manske and Wylde established PreNeo Press as their conceptual and collaborative space in 1992. They are engaged in interdisciplinary studio practices and projects that build creative community. Their collaboration revolves around a continuous dialogue about aspects of the art world and global/cultural phenomena. They are interested in interpretation and understanding; making meaning out of the complex world we live in; and communicating ideas, perceptions and perspectives.
Pre and Neo are frequently used prefixes applied to art historical time periods and genres. Pre meaning before and Neo meaning new. Press has a dual meaning for the artists. First, it indicates their desire to push themselves intellectually and creatively. Second, it refers to their backgrounds and art making identities as printmakers.
Significant to Manske and Wylde’s art life is bringing attention to other creative entities. They do this by curating exhibitions; publishing anthologies, catalogs, and interviews with creative people; facilitating art experiences and collaborative projects; instigating creative interventions; inviting artists to create projects in their print studio; and serving local arts organizations.
